The “Regional Workshop on the Evaluation of Nuclear Security Detection Architecture” successfully drew to a close today at RACVIAC – Centre for Security Cooperation. Held from 9th to 13th December 2024, the Workshop brought together experts, representatives from national agencies, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to advance understanding and collaboration in the critical area of nuclear security.

With the valuable support of the IAEA, the Workshop featured keynote presentations, panel discussions, exercises and interactive sessions led by distinguished lecturers. Participants delved into topics such as nuclear security detection systems, strategies for preventing illicit trafficking of nuclear materials, and the NSDA evaluation processes.

International Atomic Energy Agency representative, Mr. Mirza Mohamed, in his Closing address extended his deepest gratitude to all the participants and experts for their dedication and active involvement over the past week. He also thanked RACVIAC for steadfast support in organizing such an excellent workshop and said that future joint cooperation is expected to continue in the coming years.

In his Closing Remarks, Ambassador Constantin-Mihail Grigorie, expressed profound gratitude to all attendees for their active engagement and contributions. He highlighted the enduring significance of the Workshop’s focus, stating, “The topic of Nuclear Security Detection Architecture does not cease to be relevant, moreover, it is of great importance, demanding our steady attention and commitment. Our continued dedication to improving nuclear security detection systems will help ensure that we remain one step ahead in preventing the threat of illicit nuclear material trafficking and other malicious activities.”

Director of RACVIAC underscored the value of the connections and networks established during the event, calling for sustained collaboration beyond this workshop. The relationships and networks participants have built in RACVIAC, he stressed, will be essential as they continue to share knowledge and collaborate across borders.

RACVIAC Director also expressed sincere appreciation to the IAEA for their support and to the speakers for their valuable insights. “We eagerly look forward to the chance to enhance our collaboration with you in future events”, he said.

The Workshop concluded with a ceremony to recognize the participants from various sectors for their dedication and involvement. Certificates were distributed to representatives from RACVIAC Members, Associate Members, Uzbekistan and Kosovo*, national agencies, acknowledging their active participation and commitment to strengthening nuclear security frameworks.

The Regional Workshop on the Evaluation of Nuclear Security Detection Architecture served as a critical platform for addressing shared challenges and fostering international cooperation, contributing to global efforts to ensure safety and security in the nuclear domain.
