The Conventional Ammunition Management Seminar ‘Developments in Conventional Ammunition Management: What is New in Policy and Practice?’, which was organized by RACVIAC – Centre for Security Cooperation in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD)’s Ammunition Management Advisory Team (AMAT), ended on 30th November 2023 on RACVIAC premises.

The overall aim of this seminar was to present recent policy developments at the international level with the conclusion of an open-ended working group (OEWG) on conventional ammunition, and reflect on the implications of this multilateral process for RACVIAC Members. No less important was to explore how enhancing technical capacity for assessments can strengthen organizational capabilities and capacities in through-life conventional ammunition management.

The Seminar Closing remarks were delivered by COL Kayhan Turhan, Programme Manager in RACVIAC CSE Pillar.

Col Turhan expressed gratitude to RACVIAC partners, the United Nations Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining’s (GICHD) Ammunition Management Advisory Team (AMAT), for their supportive approach during the preparatory phase and their professionalism during the execution of this Seminar: “Your commitment was commendable and particularly the fact that you showed real concern when it comes to the final outcome of this particular event. Working with you in this joint enterprise has been inspiring and I hope that we can continue with our fruitful cooperation in the years to come.”

Col Kayhan wished all a safe trip back home and every success in the future, after which he presented the participants with certificates together with Ms. Nora Allgaier, Political Affairs Officer, Conventional Arms Branch, UNODA.

The participants of the Seminar had the opportunity to get an insight into the Global Framework for Through-life Conventional Ammunition Management, and, furthermore, to reflect on its implications and explore how enhancing technical capacity for assessments can reinforce organizational capabilities and capacities in conventional ammunition management.

This seminar brought together professionals and experts in the field of through-life management of conventional ammunition, including representatives of national militaries, relevant defence ministries and international and regional organizations.

The Seminar included presentations, group exercises (table-top exercises), and discussions. The participants showed a substantial level of involvement in the event, with noteworthy inputs from both speakers and attendees (consisting of 16 participants and 12 distinguished speakers).
